Judges 11 – Bible in a Year

By No Comments2 min read

Judges 11-12. What words have you said to God as an oath? Do we take them seriously? Do we actually go out them?

Judges 11-12, Bible in a Year, Day 39

Judges 11

The story of Jephthah from Judges 11 is ….what words are there? Horrifying.

It reminds me of that verse that says ‘let your nay be nay and your ye by ye’.

Jesus said that in Matthew 5:37

But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”

Jephthah opened his mouth to utter a vow he did not need to make. He probably thought he was being super spiritual.

God had already put his Spirit on him, and things were in going to plan but he just had to swear an oath to God. I don’t even want to share it – what a fool! God did not require that oath but it is nonetheless a serious thing once uttered and the consequences were utterly horrific.

I know I have uttered commitments to the Lord and I remind myself of them all the time, to keep them, to honor them, even when I don’t feel like it. They scare me. Words matter.

If Gods oath is immutable – as Paul tells us – why are human beings oath any less serious? #foodforthought

Judges 12

But Jephthah judged Israel 6 years.

– another tribe of Israel got jealous and came to fight him – how ridiculous right???? Sounds like some churches/Christians today…. Oh dear.

Then Ibzan the next 7 years.

Then Elon – Elon Musks name origin? – judged 10 years.

Then Abdon, 8 years.

And Israel did evil again!

Human beings, do we ever learn????

But God is so committed to his oath to Abraham!!!!! He is ahead of this constant failure.

Judges 11-12 give you an incredible insight into the progress of Israel towards to things God has for them!!
